Workshop Manager

Purpose of the role

The Workshop Manager is responsible for the daily performance, efficiency, and standards of the Fergies workshop. This is a role built on technical leadership — developing technicians, embedding the Auto IQ 15-Stage Diagnostic Process, and ensuring the workshop operates at 120% efficiency with consistent quality throughout. The role is introduced in two structured phases, allowing a clear transition from hands-on technical development into full workshop management.

  • Workshop efficiency consistently at 120%
  • All technicians fluent in the Auto IQ 15-Stage Diagnostic Process
  • Safety inspections completed within 40 minutes by all technicians
  • Technicians never running out of work during the day
  • A clean, organised and professional workshop environment at all times
Phase 1 — Technician Development (6 to 18 months)
  • Train diagnostic technicians — approximately 2 hours of structured training per day
  • Ensure all technicians reach the required Fergies diagnostic standard within 6 to 18 months
  • Maintain personal productivity of 6 hours of labour sold per day
  • Monitor the workshop schedule so technicians do not run out of work
  • Prepare the next day's schedule according to the Fergies Perfect Day SOP
Phase 2 — Workshop Performance and Management
  • Train technicians to complete safety inspections within 40 minutes
  • Train technicians to complete diagnostic Stage 1 in 45 minutes and write up the test plan within the 1 hour allocation
  • Support all technicians technically, raising capability and decision-making skills
  • Carry out quality control on all safety inspections and vehicle inspection reports — 100% check rate
  • Maintain workshop cleanliness, organisation, and professional standards
Daily accountability
  • Responsible for the daily performance and standards of the workshop
  • Ensure technicians work efficiently and productively throughout the day
  • Ensure workshop processes and standards are consistently followed
  • Ensure all completed work meets the quality expectations of Fergies
Workflow management
  • Each technician should always have three jobs prepared ahead — current job, next job, and a third if work finishes early
  • At 2pm each day, review remaining work scheduled and make adjustments to keep the workshop productive
  • At 5pm each day, finalise the next day's schedule per the Fergies Perfect Day SOP
Daily routine
Morning
  • Review the schedule for the day ahead
  • Ensure all technicians know their first jobs
  • Confirm vehicles and parts are ready
2pm Check
  • Review remaining work for the day
  • Close schedule gaps and reallocate work
  • Provide technician support where required
5pm Prep
  • Prepare next day's schedule per Perfect Day SOP
  • Ensure workshop finishes tidy and organised
  • Confirm parts and assignments ready for morning
