Junior Service Technician
Reports to: Deputy Workshop Manager  ·  Efficiency: 80 to 90%  ·  Progression: Performance-based
Purpose of the role

The Junior Service Technician is at the start of their Fergies journey. This role is about learning to do things the right way from day one — the Fergies service process, the SSS inspection standard, and the precision that underpins everything. They work under the supervision of the Deputy Workshop Manager, ask questions rather than guessing, and are actively building towards the efficiency and independence required to reach the mid tier.

Success at this level looks like
  • Efficiency building steadily and sitting consistently between 80 and 90%
  • Carrying out servicing correctly under supervision with zero negligence comebacks
  • Completing SSS inspections under supervision and learning the process thoroughly
  • Learning service resets and history updates with guidance from the Deputy WSM
  • Demonstrating the attitude, care and professionalism expected of every Fergies technician
Core responsibilities
  • Carry out manufacturer-specified servicing under the supervision of the Deputy Workshop Manager
  • Follow the manufacturer workshop manual exactly on every job — never work from memory or assumption
  • Use only genuine or OE quality parts as instructed — raise any parts queries before proceeding
  • Carry out the Fergies SSS safety and service standards check on every vehicle assigned, under supervision while learning
  • Complete service light resets and vehicle history updates with guidance from the Deputy WSM
  • Document all findings on the job card accurately and promptly after each task
  • Flag all additional work identified during inspection through the job card — never advise a customer directly
  • Keep their bay clean, organised and hazard-free throughout the working day
Decision making at this tier

The Junior Service Technician escalates all decisions to the Deputy Workshop Manager. If they are unsure about any aspect of a job, they stop and ask. Proceeding without confidence is never acceptable.

Daily routine
Start of day
  • Arrive in clean, presentable Fergies uniform
  • Check all SSS tools are present and in full working order — report any issues to the WSM immediately
  • Check all hand tools are in full working order — report any issues to the WSM immediately
  • Check in with the Deputy WSM on the day's jobs and priorities
  • Confirm all parts are ready for the first job
During the day
  • Work through allocated jobs under supervision following the manufacturer workshop manual
  • Complete the SSS check on every vehicle
  • Complete job card documentation immediately after each task
  • Empty the bay bin before it overflows Bin SOP
  • Return all tools to their exact catalogued location after every job Tool Finder SOP
End of day
  • Confirm all job cards are completed accurately
  • Return all tools to correct catalogued locations
  • Empty the bay bin before leaving
  • Leave the bay clean and organised
  • Shut down the PC and apply any required updates
  • Put the workshop phone on charge

At the Junior tier, the expectation is clear — escalate all decisions to the Deputy Workshop Manager. This protects the customer, the vehicle and the technician.

What must always be escalated
  • Any finding during a service or inspection that requires a decision about additional work
  • Any uncertainty about the correct process, torque specification, fluid type or part
  • Any vehicle condition not anticipated at the time of booking
  • All customer queries — always through front of house
  • Any faulty tool or equipment — report to the WSM immediately
Personal and professional standards

The following standards apply every single day at every tier. There are no exceptions and they are not negotiable.

  • Wear the Fergies uniform provided every day — clean and presentable at the start of every shift
  • Check all SSS tools at the start of each day — report any faults to the Workshop Manager immediately
  • Check all hand tools at the start of each day — report any faults to the Workshop Manager immediately
  • Empty the bay bin before it overflows — follow the Bin SOP Bin SOP
  • Return every tool to its exact catalogued location after every job — follow the Tool Finder SOP Tool Finder SOP
  • Shut down the PC at the end of every working day and apply any required updates
  • Put the workshop phone on charge at the end of every working day
Technical standards
  • Always follows the manufacturer workshop manual — every step, every time
  • Carries out the SSS check on every vehicle — it is not optional at any tier
  • Never advises a customer directly on additional work found
  • Escalates all decisions to the Deputy WSM — asks rather than guesses
Progressing to Service Technician (Mid)

Progression is performance-based. There is no minimum time in role. The following must be demonstrated consistently before progression is considered.

What must be demonstrated
  • Efficiency consistently within or above the 80 to 90% band without supervision
  • Able to perform all standard service tasks independently with no help or advice required
  • Able to complete all service light resets independently across the full Fergies vehicle range
  • Able to update vehicle service histories independently and accurately every time
  • SSS inspections completed independently and to the required standard
  • Inspection time consistently approaching 40 minutes
  • Zero negligence comebacks sustained over a meaningful period
  • Technical comebacks tracking at or below 1% of jobs completed
