MOT Tester
Reports to: Workshop Manager  ·  Add-on to existing technician role  ·  DVSA authorised examiner
This is an add-on role, not a standalone one

The MOT Tester qualification and responsibility sits on top of the individual’s existing technician role — whether that is Service, Repair or Troubleshooter at any tier. Their base technician role, its responsibilities, KPIs and standards all continue to apply in full. This page covers only the additional responsibilities, standards and expectations that come with being a qualified MOT Tester at Fergies.

Purpose of the add-on role

The MOT Tester is a DVSA-authorised examiner responsible for carrying out MOT tests on behalf of Fergies at its authorised testing facility. They are accountable for the accuracy, integrity and documentation of every test they conduct. An MOT test carried out at Fergies carries the Fergies name and reputation — the standard of every test must reflect that.

Who this person is

Methodical, thorough and completely impartial when testing. They understand that an MOT test is a legal assessment, not a sales tool, and they apply the DVSA testing standards with the same precision every single time regardless of who the customer is, who referred the vehicle, or what the vehicle is worth. They are also a fully competent Fergies technician in their own right and manage their testing workload efficiently within the working day.

Success in this add-on role looks like
  • Every MOT completed within 45 minutes without compromising the standard of the test
  • Zero tester errors — no incorrect passes, no incorrect failures, no documentation mistakes
  • All DVSA records and testing documentation completed accurately and on time
  • The MOT station is always compliant, clean and ready for a DVSA inspection without notice
  • Testing workload managed efficiently so technician productivity is not significantly impacted
MOT testing responsibilities
  • Carry out MOT tests to the full DVSA testing standard on every vehicle — no shortcuts, no assumptions, no influence from anyone inside or outside the business
  • Complete every test within the 45-minute target without compromising the thoroughness or accuracy of the assessment
  • Issue correct pass, fail or advisory outcomes accurately and in line with DVSA standards every time
  • Complete all DVSA documentation and testing records accurately on the day of the test — never left incomplete
  • Communicate MOT outcomes clearly to the Workshop Manager so front of house can inform the customer professionally
  • Never communicate an MOT result directly to a customer — all customer communication goes through front of house
MOT station responsibilities
  • Maintain the MOT station to DVSA compliance standards at all times
  • Ensure all testing equipment is in full working order before each testing session — report any faults to the Workshop Manager immediately
  • Keep the testing area clean, organised and presentable
  • Flag any compliance concerns with the Workshop Manager and owner immediately — never attempt to resolve a compliance issue without the owner being aware
  • Complete all required DVSA record-keeping and site management responsibilities on time
Advisory and repair referral
  • Document all MOT advisories fully and accurately on the test record
  • Pass all advisory items to the Workshop Manager via the job card so the Outbound Sales Advisor can present them to the customer
  • Never advise a customer on post-MOT repair work directly — advisory and repair conversations always go through front of house
MOT testing additions to the daily routine

The following applies on any day that includes MOT testing, in addition to the standard daily routine for their base technician role.

Before first test
  • Check all MOT testing equipment is present, calibrated and in full working order
  • Report any equipment faults to the Workshop Manager immediately — do not begin testing with faulty equipment
  • Confirm the MOT station is clean, compliant and ready
  • Review the day’s MOT bookings and confirm vehicles are scheduled in the correct order
During testing
  • Complete every test within the 45-minute target
  • Complete all DVSA documentation immediately after each test — never deferred
  • Pass the outcome and all advisory items to the Workshop Manager promptly after each test
  • Return to base technician work between tests — testing time is managed within the working day
End of day
  • Confirm all DVSA records for the day are completed and accurate
  • Leave the MOT station clean, organised and compliant
  • Report any equipment concerns or compliance observations to the Workshop Manager before leaving

MOT testing standards

The following standards apply in addition to all personal and professional standards required by the individual’s base technician role.

  • Every test is carried out to the full DVSA standard without exception — the Fergies name is on every certificate issued
  • The 45-minute target applies on every test — time pressure never justifies cutting the testing process short
  • Testing outcomes are never influenced by anyone inside or outside the business — not the Workshop Manager, not the owner, not the customer
  • All DVSA documentation is completed accurately and on the day — never left to be done later
  • Advisory items are always documented fully — a partial advisory record is not acceptable
  • The MOT station is maintained to DVSA compliance standards every day, not just ahead of inspections
  • Any compliance concern, equipment fault or testing irregularity is reported to the Workshop Manager and owner immediately
  • DVSA authorisation is maintained — any training, renewal or notification requirements are the tester’s personal responsibility to flag to the owner in advance
Tester error — zero tolerance

An incorrect test outcome — whether an incorrect pass, an incorrect failure or a significant documentation error — is treated with the same seriousness as a negligence comeback on a repair job. Any tester error will result in an immediate review with the Workshop Manager and owner. The integrity of the MOT station and its DVSA authorisation depends on every tester maintaining the highest standard on every test.

Authority within the MOT testing role
  • Full and independent authority to issue pass, fail and advisory outcomes on every vehicle tested — no other person has the authority to influence or override a test outcome
  • Authority to decline to test a vehicle that cannot be safely assessed or that falls outside the scope of the testing facility
  • Authority to remove a vehicle from the testing bay if a safety concern arises during the test
What must be escalated to the Workshop Manager
  • Any equipment fault or compliance concern before testing begins or as soon as it is identified
  • Any situation where pressure is being applied — from any source — to influence a test outcome
  • Any DVSA correspondence, notification or inspection requirement immediately upon receipt
  • Any test outcome that the tester is uncertain about before the record is completed
  • All customer communication — test outcomes and advisory conversations always go through front of house
Independence of the testing role

The MOT Tester’s authority to issue test outcomes is independent and cannot be overridden by the Workshop Manager, the owner or any other person at Fergies. This is not a policy preference — it is a legal requirement of DVSA authorisation. Any attempt to influence a test outcome must be reported to the owner immediately.
